Introduction to Online Library Services
This MS Teams session provides an overview of the Library's online services and shows you how to:
- register with the library
- search the catalogue and request loans
- request research services
- find and access our online resources
Audience: New or infrequent users of the Library.
Duration: 1 Hour
Search Strategies
This MS Teams session covers the literature search workflow, techniques to discover evidence-based information, preparing for the search, and then performing it using the authoritative online resources.
Audience: It is recommended that you are familiar with using the library’s resources or have attended an Introduction to Online Library Services session.
Duration: 1 Hour
Finding Online Newspaper Articles
This MS Teams session will show you how to: Search and find online current and archived newspaper articles from the major Victorian and Australian newspapers.
Audience: It is recommended that you are familiar with using the library’s resources or have attended an Introduction to Online Library Services session.
Duration: 30 mins
Introduction to EndNote
This MS Teams session will show how to:
Discover Endnote - a reference tool that allows you to automatically create & manage bibliographic citations to download to your documents and publications. This tool is suited to those who write policy; prepare publications or are studying.
Technical Requirements: Contact your IT department to ensure you have access to Endnote version X.7 or higher.
Audience: New or infrequent users of Endnote. It is recommended that you are familiar with using the library’s resources or have attended an Introduction to Online Library Services session and are registered with a VGLS library account.
Duration: 1 hour
Introduction to Zotero
This MS Teams session will show how to:
Discover Zotero - a reference tool that allows you to automatically create & manage bibliographic citations to download to your documents and publications. This tool is suited to those who write policy; prepare publications or are studying.
Technical Requirements:
- Contact your IT department to ensure you have permission to download Zotero if you are using your organisation's device.
- You will require both the standalone, as well as the connector for Chrome and/or Firefox
- It will help if you also have a zotero.org account for the cloud version of the software and syncing
Audience: New or infrequent users of Zotero. It is recommended that you are familiar with using the library’s resources or have attended an Introduction to Online Library Services session and are registered with a VGLS library account.
Duration: 1 hour
Legal Sessions - Finding Caselaw
This MS Teams session will enable you to:
- Locate a case with a citation or party name;
- Find case law on a particular topic, act or section of the act;
- Identify and locate the authorised version of a case;
- Find judicial consideration of cases, words and phrases.
- This session constitutes one CPD point
Audience: VPS staff employed in a legal capacity with a working knowledge of the law. It is recommended that you are familiar with using the Library service.
Duration: 1 Hour
Legal Sessions - Finding Alerts
This MS Teams session will show how to:
- Discover how to get the most out of how to establish your alerts and media monitoring using Lexis Advance.
- This session constitutes one CPD point.
Audience: VPS staff employed in a legal capacity with a working knowledge of the law. It is recommended that you are familiar with using the Library service.
Duration: 45 mins

- Search and find Victorian legislation;
- Locate historical and point-in-time legislation;
- Identify key legislation resources.
- This session constitutes one CPD point

Legal Sessions - Searching Government Gazettes
This MS Teams session will enable you to:
- Identify the online platforms for searching Government Gazettes;
- Outline what the gazettes publish and why this may be important to your research &
- Execute accurate search functions in order to locate information quickly and efficiently.

Legal Sessions - Finding Legal Commentaries
This MS Teams session will enable you to:
- Locate commentary and discussion on different areas of the law;
- Discover the online publications and services that focus on your area of interest;
- Identify established, authoritative caselaw that sets a legal precedent &
- Find annotated versions of important acts that provide a narrative on a legal area of concern.
