This book provides practical, clear and readily accessible guidelines for the general understanding and interpretation of soil test results. It covers results related to a wide range of soil properties relevant to environmental, agricultural, engineering.

This booklet has been written for the dryland grazing zones of the Goulburn Broken Catchment of Victoria. The same principles will apply, however, to other dryland grazing zones in Victoria. It aims to assist land managers in understanding and interpreting soil test data. The guidelines are not intended to provide specific recommendations but general information for consideration when making soil nutrient decisions in conjunction with professional agronomic advice.

The organochlorine pesticides, dieldrin and DDT, were widely used in the control of wire worm in potatoes and tobacco in Victoria, until 1989 and 1987 respectively, when the pesticides were banned from use in agriculture. Many properties are unsuitable for grazing animals intended for meat production or organic farming. Four soils for the trial were selected from a register of paddock files held by Veterinary officers of Agriculture Victoria. Officers were asked to nominate paddocks which had dieldrin levels of between 0.5-2.0 mg/kg. Some of the nominated soils also had high DDT levels.

The State Chemistry Laboratory (SCL) investigated the soil of the proposed Avoca waste-water disposal site in September 2001. The intention is to apply waste water within the next 3-5 years. Because this was a preliminary investigation, the sampling intensity was low, but intensive enough to provide an estimate of the soil factors (soil texture, structure and depth to clay) that will affect the way the paddock is irrigated (rate and volume). The soil was also analysed to determine the current soil fertility status, in order to establish baseline soil fertility levels, prior to the application of waste water.

EPA Victoria regulates the transport, treatment and disposal of contaminated soils in Victoria. This bulletin includes: guidance on classifying and reusing fill material for offsite reuse; the pattern and number of samples to be taken to enable appropriate classification for soils being moved off-site for re-use, treatment, or disposal; acceptance requirements for disposal facilities receiving contaminated soils to aid such facilities in meeting EPA licence acceptance criteria (Section 5).

EPA is aware of allegations by Mr Tony Pleming about soil transfer from the Chilean Club of Victoria site at 99 Palmers Road Truganina to Sanctuary Lakes. EPA is undertaking an investigation into the allegation.
