Summary:
Presents the results of the Murray-Darling Basin Commission Riverine Program, which was initiated to counter the degradation of river, stream and floodplain wetland environments in the Basin. The Kit is the result of a strategic review of 74 projects from the Riverine Program. Summaries are provided for 45 of these projects, the remainder are listed in an appendix. The projects are grouped into five themes in the Rivers Program Project Summaries report: 1. Understanding the Basin; 2. Managing Catchments; 3. Managing Rivers; 4. Managing Fish; and, 5. Managing Wetlands. Each theme is represented in an accompanyng booklet that summarises knowledge from the Riverine Program and presents the key issues for each theme.

Summary:
"The initiative: The Murray-Darling Basin initiative is the largest integrated catchment management program in the world, covering an area of over one million square kilometres. The initiative was establishd by the Murray-Darling Basin Agreement, which was initially signed by the Governments of the Commonwealth, New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia in 1987. With the revision of the Agreement in 1992, Queensland became a signatory, with the Australian Capital Territory being included in 1998 through a memorandum of understanding."

Summary:
"The report summarises the findings of ISRAG's report on the ecological health of the Basin's rivers to the Murray-Darling Basin Ministerial Council. It is the first in a triennial series of reports planned for the long-tem futre, and the SRA program is well positioned to report on trends in river health over time."--P. 1.

Summary:
Dryland salinity is an issue for both urban and rural communities. It is a major environmental threat to dryland and irrigation farming areas and their waterways of the Murray-Darling Basin. Caused by rising groundwater which is mobilising salt stored in many of the sub-soils, dryland salinity is seriously degrading some of the most productive areas of the region as well as damaging roads and housing. Salinised groundwater is also intersecting stream beds and increasing water salinity throughout the Basin. This is having a serious negative impact on flora and fauna, domestic water quality and economic activity such as agriculture and manufacturing.

Summary:
The 2003 bushfires were the most extensive fires seen in Victoria since 1939, burning over a million hectares of National Park and reserves, State Forests and grazing land. As a part of the Department of Sustainability and Environment’s Bushfire Recovery Program, a project was established to predict the magnitude and duration of changes to water quality and quantity available to downstream users as a result of the 2003 alpine bushfire. This document comprises Task 1 of the project and involves a broad scale assessment of the water yield impacts over the whole burnt area of Victoria and selected parts of NSW that drain into the River Murray or Victoria (the Snowy River).

Summary:
"This document provides guidance to water resource managers and hydrogeological practitioners to support them in applying best practice methods to estimate the "technical sustainable yield" (TSY) for groundwater systems of the Murray-Darling Basin. The guide is not a manual in that it does not set out a prescriptive method for determining sustainable yield, but allows for the flexibility to choose methods appropriate for particular catchments and/or regional and for particular developmental circumstances."

Summary:
Approximately 1.3 million ha of forested and agricultural land in eastern Victoria, Australia, was burnt by bushfires in early 2003. This report describes modelling undertaken to assess the impacts of the fires on the quality of receiving waters and river systems in the fire-affected areas of the Ovens, Kiewa, Hume and Snowy catchments.

Summary:
Following the 2003 bushfires a program of water quality monitoring was initiated by the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) in eight Victorian catchments affected by the fires: Dargo River at Lower Dargo Rd., Tambo River at Bindi and Swifts Ck., Mitta Mitta River at Hinnomunjie, Snowy River at McKillops Bridge, Ovens River at Bright, Kiewa River at Bandiana and the Wonnangatta River at Waterford. The objective of the monitoring program was to enable post-fire changes in loads of total suspended solids (TSS), total phosphorus (TP) and total nitrogen (TN) to be estimated. The spatial extent of the water quality sampling represents the most ambitious attempt to measure fire effects in Australia, and possibly elsewhere. Large impacts were recorded for all constituents, however levels of change were not consistent across the different catchments. Similarly, recovery was found to be highly variable between catchments. Analysis of the water quality datasets revealed very high levels of uncertainty in load estimates.
