Summary:
Views of logging activities near the Victorian-South Australian border and in Gippsland about 1939. Logging trams, tramways and log haulage machinery are shown. Views include cottages under construction for timber employees, waste logging at Millicent, pine plantations, the Cellulose Australia Ltd. mill site, the South Australian Perpetual Forests (SAPFOR) office in Penola, and the ship "Wiakata" transporting pulpwood docked in Melbourne. Fire damage from the 1939 fires is evident in a view of a SAPFOR pine plantation near Penola. Pine logs being delivered to the SAPFOR mill at Lake Mundi, Victoria, and a log cutting up plant owned by SAPFOR Milllng Co. in plantations of S.A. Perpetual Forests are other views. Gippsland views show log loading at Mt. Worth, semi-trailer vehicles and a kerosine-driven winch and a crane used by Paul Christensen at Mansfield for loading sawn timber.

Summary:
A programme of time studies of felling work in the plantations of Pinus radiata located in the south-east of South Australia was undertaken. Work in a delayed first thinning, a second thinning, a third thinning and a clear felling operation in a previously unthinned stand was studied. The average productivity of forest workers felling, preparing and stacking short sawlogs and four-foot pulpwood billets, was calculated.

Summary:
A view of the activities of Victorian timber mills in the 1890s, the forests upon which they depended, and mill-related family and community life. The album was presented to George Perrin in 1898. Perrin was the first Victorian Government appointed Conservator of Forests. The Australian Seasoned Timber Company cut hardwood timber in the Mt. Disappointment forests near Wandong, north of Melbourne in the 1890s. There it worked two sawmills known as "Comet Mill" and "Planet Mill" surrounded by a network of tramways which carried logs to them for cutting. At Comet Mill a thriving community developed with the sawmill's rapid expansion during the 1890s. Comet Mill closed in 1902. The Company's finishing and seasoning works were in the township of Wandong.

Summary:
The initial trial of the prototype Windsor harvester was held in Gippsland with two operators working the machine for a period of 400 hours. Modifications were made and a short trial was organised to evaluate these modifications and to obtain some idea of the machine's performance under certain adverse terrain conditions.

Summary:
The Rufous Pomaderris (Pomaderris brunnea) is endemic to south-eastern Australia, where it occurs in eastern New South Wales and eastern Victoria. Sixteen populations containing about 1,000 plants have been recorded. Threats include sand extraction, weed invasion, logging, browsing, altered fire regimes, recreational impacts and disturbance from storm water run-off. The species is listed as Vulnerable under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and the NSW Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995. This national Recovery Plan for the Rufous Pomaderris is the first recovery plan for the species, and details its distribution, habitat, threats and recovery objectives and actions necessary to ensure its long-term survival.

Summary:
A suitable seedbed for the natural regeneration of High Elevation Mixed Species (HEMS) in south-eastern Australia can be achieved operationally by the application of high intensity fire to the logging debris (slash). However high elevations can often mean that it is difficult to achieve the required fire intensity to produce satisfactory seedbeds. As there was only limited knowledge about what contributed to a successful HEMS slash burn, this study undertook a detailed appraisal of fuel, weather, topography and ignition method variables at a total of 16 operational logging coupes over two years.
