Summary:
Throughout the world river systems have been dramatically altered by dams and reservoirs, channelization and landuse developments. Alongside a continuing need to develop rivers and water resources, there is a strong concern for ecosystem sustainability and the restoration of damaged systems. Increasingly, efforts have been directed to the application of scientific principles to the development of environmentally-sensitive approaches for managing rivers. Drawing on chapters from the two volumes of The Rivers Handbook this book provides an overview of ecologically sensitive approaches to the restoration of river ecosystems. River Restoration presents the fundamental building blocks for developing restoration programmes and mitigating environmental impacts. In addition, two chapters consider the principles of environmental monitoring of rivers and system recovery. Aimed at final-year undergraduate and postgraduate students, the book will also be of interest to all those concerned with river conservation, including environmental scientists, river engineers and river managers.
