Summary:
La Trobe University released its first sustainability report in April 2011, the award-winning Responsible Futures, which covered the University's social, environmental and economic footprint and outlined future performance targets. In April 2012, the University released Creating Futures to report on its progress thus far and commit to further performance improvements. Both reports followed the Global Reporting Initiative's Sustainability Reporting Guidelines and AccountAbility's AA1000 Principles, and externally assured following AccountAbility's AA1000 Assurance Standard. Providing external assurance demonstrates the University's commitment to the honest and transparent appraisal of the impact we have on our community and the environment.

Summary:
This qualitative study examined the participatory experiences of people with an intellectual disability as members of government disability advisory bodies in Australia. These forums are one of the strategies adopted by governments to enable people with an intellectual disability to participate in the formulation of social policy. Such opportunities have arisen from progressive policy that frames people with an intellectual disability as full citizens with equal rights to inclusion and participation in society. Little research has considered how people with an intellectual disability experience the participatory opportunities that have grown from this recognition of their rights. This reflects the more traditional focus on their status and participation as consumers and service users. The central question of this study is how people with an intellectual disability experience participation in government advisory bodies, and how such forums can be inclusive and meaningful. This study positions people with an intellectual disability as the experts about their own experiences by relying primarily on their first person accounts of their experiences. Ethnographic and case study methods were employed including in-depth interviews with the central participants, document analysis, observation of the work of the advisory bodies and interviews with others involved in advisory bodies Analysis led to the development of a typology of participation that describes the political and personal orientations people have to participation. The study found that structures and the processes used by advisory bodies can mediate people's experiences: however more significantly, the experiences of people with intellectual disability are shaped by their perception of how they are regarded by others. Central to this is the efficacy of support based on the development of collegiate relationships, similar to the notion of civic friendship described by Reinders (2002), rather than support that is solely focussed on tangible accommodations. The study concludes that citizen participation bodies have not fully recognised the personal and political potential of members with an intellectual disability. It presents evidence that people with an intellectual disability are capable of this form of participation, can provide legitimate and informed perspectives on policy and can engage meaningfully, given full recognition of their capacity to participate as well as structures and processes that enable this.

Summary:
"Despite interest in the palaeontology, groundwater and tourist caves of the karst of the western Otway Basin, limited investigation of the karst landscape development and the processes has occurred. This study documents the overall features of the Gambier Karst Province and delineates its boundaries. The province comprises extensive area where cave and karst development is limited, interspersed with areas of atypical karst development. Two such karst sub regions are distinguished in the karst in the Tertiary limestones (Naracoorte and Glenelg River). These subregions contain karst assemblages with distinctive combinations of karst landform and process. At Naracoorte the caves are concentrated and range from simple single passages to complex multi level caves. The cave passages trend northwest/southeast and contain a range of fossiliferous clastic sediments and dated speleothems. Cave walls retain evidence of solutional features. Dolines, uvalas and blind valleys characterise the surface karst. In the Glenelg area the karst, despite similarities such as the orientation of cave passages, the caves are smaller, less complex and more strongly associated with the main surface drainage (Glenelg River). The syngeneric aeolianite karst is hosted within a different lithology; the Pleistocene dunes and their interdune swales that dominate the surface karst landscape. These shallow, prodominantly horizontal caves vary from large maze type systems to short single caves, and have formed under a hardened cap rock in the dune. It is widespread across the province where favourable conditions occur. This study includes the development of a model for the landscape history of the karst landscapes of Naracoorte, and Glenelg River areas of the western Otway Basin since the Pliocene. This model integrates the cave morphology and processes with groundwater and long term landscape data. This extends the current knowledge of the Gambier Karst Province and potentially contributes to more effective management of the karst of the province.

Summary:
The effect of the deep placement of phosphorus (P) fertiliser applications (0-200 kg P/ha) was studied in the field with irrigated field crops and in the glasshouse. The field studies were conducted in farmers' paddocks in commercial irrigated crops of wheat, maize, canola and faba beans, at four different sites across Northern Victoria. Limited grain yield responses to deep P in association with deep N (3%), were observed in a wheat crop at one site. No significant grain yield responses were seen for the crops at the other three sites, resulting from the deep placement of P fertiliser, despite a 12% increase in canola grain yield at one of the sites. The general outcome from the field studies was that there is limited justification for deep placement of fertiliser P in the field. A segmented soil column procedure was developed to measure the shoot and root growth of 8-week old crop plants. A number of findings came from these soil column experiments. First, P addition of around 200 mg P/kg to the deep 150-200 mm soil layer was required to stimulate root branching within this soil layer. Second, P fertiliser addition to the surface soil was also important in addition to the deep applied P, to maximise deep root growth in the deep soil layer. A specific combination of shallow and deep P applications consistently gave the highest root growth response in the deep P-amended layer for both wheat and canola. Increased root growth in the deep soil layer did not correlate with maximum water extraction fiom that soil layer. This occurred with the highest levels of surface or deep P addition, resulting in large shoot growth and fewer but thicker roots, that extended down into the bottom of the soil column. The plasticity in root response by wheat and canola plants to different soil conditions was demonstrated with the proportion of roots in shallow or deeper soil layers changing significantly with different P placement combinations. Differences between crop species occurred with faba beans being unable to modify root growth in response to the deep placement of P. The key findings from these glasshouse studies are that deep placement of P fertiliser resulted in increased root growth in this fertilised layer, but did not necessarily result in increased water uptake from deeper soil layers.
