A range of natural and human-induced disturbances can impact on the health and vitality of forest ecosystems. These include fire, introduced and native plants and animals, pathogens, drought, river regulation and climate change. These disturbances need to be identified, monitored and managed to ensure that forest health is maintained.

Healthy forests are vital to protect soil and water resources which are required to maintain terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems in forests. Good quality soil and water resources are also of inestimable value to society, providing ecosystem services such as good quality drinking water for our communities.

Sustainable forest management is essential for the conservation of Victoria’s forests and the biodiversity they contain. Managing forests to protect biodiversity and maintain ecosystem health will ensure the ongoing survival of forest dependent species and the genetic variability within those species. Reporting against sustainable forest management indicators will increase our knowledge of forest ecosystems and the biodiversity they contain. This knowledge will improve the management of Victoria’s forest ecosystems through the identification of priorities and enabling the effectiveness of forest management programs to be assessed.

Forest ecosystems play an important role in the global greenhouse gas balance and global carbon cycle by storing carbon in both trees and soil. The ability of forests to take up carbon is vital to the mitigation of climate change. We need to improve our knowledge on how forests and forestry activities affect the global greenhouse gas balance and global carbon cycle. This will help to inform management actions designed to mitigate human-induced climate change.

The Timber Industry Action Plan released by the Victorian Government in 2011 aims to provide for a productive, competitive and sustainable Victorian timber industry. In response to this plan, the ‘A New Strategic Approach to Biodiversity Management’ project was established to develop ‘an effective landscape approach to the management of threatened species that provides opportunities for sustainable timber production while managing biodiversity at a species and landscape scale’. This project has both research and policy components. The aim of the research component is to provide extensive new data on the status, distribution and habitat use of priority threatened fauna species in the forests of eastern Victoria to inform the policy development of a new landscape management approach. This report provides a summary of the findings from this research component.

The twentieth century has seen a considerable increase in forest cover in Great Britain. Under the influence of the Forestry Commission, the area of productive forest has more that doubled since 1919. Many new forests have been planted on important wildlife habitats, and there has been a serious decline in the area of Ancient and semi-natural woodlands. These trends have brought foresters and conservationists into conflict. We offer the proposals in this paper to remove the grounds for conflict by securing an environmentally beneficial form of forestry.

Australia's State of the Forests Report 2008 (SOFR 2008) is the third five-yearly report on Australia's forests. It presents data obtained from a wide range of sources, including the public and private sectors. In this report, 7 criteria and 44 indicators provide a framework and methodology for describing and evaluating progress towards forest sustainability at the national level.

Australia's unique forests are a major natural asset in terms of biodiversity conservation, the global carbon cycle, fresh water supplies, and the maintenance of environmental and social values. Forests are also a key economic asset to Australia.

"The colour of carbon matters. Green carbon is the carbon stored in plants and soil of natural ecosystems and is a vital part of the global carbon cycle. This report is the first in a series that examines the role of natural forests in the storage of carbon, the impacts of human land use activities, and the implications for climate change policy nationally and internationally. REDD (reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation) is now part of the agenda for the Bali Road Map being debated in the lead-up to the Copenhagen climate change conference in 2009. Currently, international rules are blind to the colour of carbon so that the green carbon in natural forests is not recognized, resulting in perverse outcomes including ongoing deforestation and forest degradation, and the conversion of extensive areas of land to industrial plantations. This report examines REDD policy from a green carbon scientific perspective. Subsequent reports will focus on issues concerning the carbon sequestration potential of commercially logged natural forests, methods for monitoring REDD, and the long term implications of forest policy and management for the global carbon cycle and climate change."--Provided by publisher.
