Summary:
An essential aim of sustainable forest management is to maintain the productive capacity of forests to deliver the goods and services required by society. The use of Victoria’s forest resources must be at a level that can be sustained whilst minimising the impact on forest ecosystems. Monitoring the use of wood and non-wood resources is vital to identify any impacts on the long-term sustainability of forest resources and will inform the management of existing and future forest resources.

Summary:
The legal, institutional and economic frameworks for forest conservation are key components of sustainable forest management in Victoria. These frameworks should ensure that decisions on forest management involve the community and industry, and effectively integrate short and long term economic, environmental and social considerations. Improving the capacity to enforce laws, regulations and guidelines that support sustainable forest management is also essential.

Summary:
The key objective of the project is to present a selection of local farm forestry case studies that will assist landholders to assess the merit of integrating farm forestry with existing agricultural enterprises in the North West Region of Victoria. This report underpins the appended text for the publication Forestry as Agriculture - an introduction to four farm forestry design options for the NW Region of Victoria. This publication will be part of a series of regional Forestry as Agriculture publications providing factual financial guidelines for landholders to use in assessing the merit of integrating productive trees into their farming systems. This report also includes economic analyses of the same four farm forestry options and should be of value to advisers and landholders who already have considerable tree planting experience.

Summary:
This Criterion considers the social and economic (socio-economic) aspects of forest management. Socio-economic data are important measures of the benefits and value of forests to communities, including Indigenous communities. Victorian communities have strong social, spiritual and cultural links to their forests. These links are often related to traditional forest uses, recreation, and the provision of jobs and forest products. Recognising and using the valuable experience and knowledge available in the community will greatly contribute to the sustainable management of Victoria’s State forests.

Summary:
Forest ecosystems play an important role in the global greenhouse gas balance and global carbon cycle by storing carbon in both trees and soil. The ability of forests to take up carbon is vital to the mitigation of climate change. We need to improve our knowledge on how forests and forestry activities affect the global greenhouse gas balance and global carbon cycle. This will help to inform management actions designed to mitigate human-induced climate change.
