The effect of intensive logging in bird populations in Central Gippsland forests, and changes in these populations during forest regeneration, was investigated. Mature forest was found to carry the highest densities of individuals and species, while 0 - 5 year regrowth and 21 - 30 year regrowth supported low bird populations. 6 - 10 and 11 - 20 year regrowth were characterised by moderate populations as was 70 - 100 year regrowth. Removal of the mature canopy during logging disadvantaged honeyeaters, parrots, treecreepers and most canopy foraging insectivores.

Research will investigate how combinations of past land use (agriculture and pine plantations) have affected the composition of present day vegetation. This information will be used to recommend site-specific management techniques for the rehabilitation of former plantation areas according to former land use.

'Seed Tree' is a silvicultural system that involves retaining a number of trees to supply seed for regeneration after the rest of the trees are harvested.

This harvesting and silvicultural system is complex because it involves cutting a forest coupe in two stages, each stage separated by 8-15 years. It is used in more open, even-aged forests where new tree seedlings can grow under partially shaded conditions.

Selection felling is a method of harvesting a coupe in which small patches of trees or single mature trees are removed. This occurs on a periodic basis, so the forest remains of an uneven age. Regeneration usually occurs after each felling so there is a wide variety of ages among the trees in the forest.

The time of sowing of high elevation mixed species forest is an important factor in the success of regeneration. This study was undertaken to determine the best time of sowing for the germination, survival and early growth of seed sown on mechanically disturbed seedbeds.

A suitable seedbed for the natural regeneration of High Elevation Mixed Species (HEMS) in south-eastern Australia can be achieved operationally by the application of high intensity fire to the logging debris (slash). However high elevations can often mean that it is difficult to achieve the required fire intensity to produce satisfactory seedbeds. As there was only limited knowledge about what contributed to a successful HEMS slash burn, this study undertook a detailed appraisal of fuel, weather, topography and ignition method variables at a total of 16 operational logging coupes over two years.
