Summary:
Soil is a complex body that exists as many types, each with diverse properties that may vary widely across time and space as a function of many factors. This complexity makes the evaluation of soil quality much more challenging than that of water or air quality. Evaluation of soil quality now considers environmental implications as well as economic productivity, seeking to be more holistic in its approach. Thus, soil quality research draws from a wide range of disciplines, blending the approaches of biologists, physicists, chemists, ecologists, economists and agronomists, among others. This book presents a broad perspective of soil quality that includes these various perspectives and gives a strong theoretical basis for the assessment of soil quality. A short glossary provides definitions for terms used throughout the book.

Summary:
"This volume, Climate Change and Agroforestry System: Adaptation and Mitigation Strategies, addresses the burning issues of the impact of climate change, the alteration of environmental quality, and subsequent mitigation and adaptation strategies through various agroecosystem practices, primarily in agroforestry. It provides new insights in the field of role of agroecosystems toward combating the negative impact of climate change as well as maintaining the sustainability of ecosystem. The book discusses in depth the impact of climate change on forests and other agroecosystems. It presents new research on mitigation strategies, looking at carbon sequestration in agricultural soils, environmental greening, natural resource management, and livelihood security. It provides a thorough analysis of the potential of various modern, improved, and scientific farming practices, such as climate-smart agriculture and agroforestry systems for climate change mitigation and adaptation. The book also examines the invasion of major fungal diseases in forests and agricultural crops due to climatic fluctuations and goes on to look at water and waste management practices. The updated information and recent developments found in this volume will be valuable for researchers, policymakers, faculty, and students in the field of forestry, agroforestry, environment, ecology, and natural resources"--

Summary:
The commercial production and use of transgenic crops is generating much public debate. Some concern has been raised by consumer and environmental groups along with agriculturalists about recent development in the technology. In this climate it may be difficult to capture the full benefits that biotechnology offers. As an element of public and political considerations, scientists are assessing the possible risks posed by genetically modified organisms. Although many scientists accept that transgenic crops and the commodities produced from them present minimal risks, there are issues that have to be addressed, incuding outcrossing and the strategic use of resistance to herbicides and insects. This workshop aimed to expand and elevate the level of debate on transgenic crops and appropriate forms of regulation for Australia.
